Oak Island Seagull

Oak Island Gull, 8 x 8 " oil on linen panel, ©2015, Fay Terry
$130 plus shipping and tax

Click HERE to purchase

This is one of the many seagulls living on the Island enjoying time on the sand. I take pictures of these birds all year long and always like painting them.  I toned the canvas with thio violet and let it dry before I started the painting.
This is a brand of canvas panel I have not used previously, now I realize that it absorbs the paint like a sponge.  I repainted it after watching the image get lighter and lighter.

Here's a little known fact:
Seagulls can drink both fresh and salt water. Most animals are unable to do this, but seagulls have a special pair of glands right above their eyes which is specifically designed to flush the salt from their systems through openings in the bill.

I hope you enjoy this little glimpse of the beach and the bird.

Island Afternoon

Island Afternoon, 9 x 12 " oil on linen panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

This was a fun painting to do while it has been raining all day.  I was at least thinking of a sunny day while I worked. I have painted this scene before and it was on a much smaller scale. I am planning to do an even larger one after I make a few adjustments to this.
My Gardenias have just begun to bloom so I will be painting those when the rain stops. I have been cutting them and bringing their sweet scent into the house. Not everyone loves them, but I surely do.

Summer Retreat

Summer Retreat, 20 x 24 " oil on linen, ©2015, Fay Terry

I had a great time painting this scene because I love this house and its surroundings. It is very old and has an unusual floor plan, not to mention a fabulous view. This painting is going to a show at the beach.

Happy Memorial Day and thanks to all those who have served our country and protected our freedom. This is also the unofficial opening of the summer season. My favorite places to be in the summer nearly always include the ocean. I hope this is the start of a wonderful summer for all of you, wherever you may be.
Thank you for looking at my art.

Twenty Eight Of Thirty

Golf Cart Garage, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

I am back again to one of my favorite islands, Bald Head, with a painting of the golf cart garage of a home near Flora's Bluff. Palm trees have not been in my painting repertoire very long; I have found  that I love to paint them, it's such fun.
The main mode of transportation on Bald Head is by golf cart. Every home has at least one for going to the Maritime Market, the beach, restaurants, coffee shop, hardware store, etc.  Yes, people do walk but it is a long way to go sometimes and a cart is a must. The roads are all paved and wide so it's easy to get around.
Bald Head Island is one of the East Coast's most important nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles.
Above the door you can see the copper shape of the baffled light. BHI has had a lighting ordinance since 2001 to protect the female loggerhead turtles and hatchlings from dangers associated with exposure to artificial light. Lights must be shielded from horizontal view.

Twenty Five Of Thirty

Costa Rica Sunset,  6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100 plus shipping

Painting a subject that you have not attempted previously is often not what you expected. This is a dramatic sunset that I photographed in Costa Rica; I expected to spend a long time on it but I found that I did not want to disturb the strokes of paint that I put into the sky so I left it alone. Since the water had been painted first, then all I had remaining to paint was the sailboat and finally the sun.

I would like to try more of these but would like to be outdoors looking at the event as it happens and try to capture it. I guess it doesn't hurt to practice so I'll be ready next time I get a chance to paint the sunset.

Twelve Of Thirty

View From The Lodge, 6 x 12" oil on panel ©2014, Fay Terry

These trees made quite an impression on me on a recent visit to Sea Island, Georgia. We arrived  just in time for lunch and were seated facing this view. The shadows on the grass and the long expanse of the ocean made me want to paint this scene.
Every evening between six and seven a bagpiper stood in the shade and played the pipes. He gradually moved from one end of the lawn to the other.  It was a beautiful sight and the music was well suited to the early evening atmosphere with nice breezes coming off the water.
I really enjoy painting long rectangular paintings once in awhile; they are a nice change from my usual square daily paintings.

Three Of Thirty

Monhegan, Ocean View, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

I am so glad I signed up for this challenge because I am meeting lots of artists and getting to see some really creative themes and new paintings.  It is especially impressive just by the sheer numbers of paintings that are being posted each day on Leslie's blog. I congratulate all of you who are pouring your love and energy into this project and I hope you are having as much fun as I am.
Having a theme has already been helpful to me; I had no consistency of subject matter the last time I did the challenge and it does make a difference.
Happy Painting and viewing everyone and thanks for visiting my blog!

Summer Moments

Proud Pelican, 5 x 7 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

This was painted from a photo I found either on Paint My Photo or the Morgue File. It was fun to paint and I am grateful for the use of the photo.  I still want to find my collection of Pelican photos to use.
I will be continuing with more of these amazing creatures. I love seeing a long line of them flying over the beach.

Just For Fun

Just Beachy, 8 x 8 " oil on cradled panel, 2014, Fay Terry

I am thinking about the beach today when we expect to get our first snow of the year, maybe as much as five inches. It is very cold but I am excited about the prospect of snow and I already see a few flakes. Maybe  it's wishful thinking, but I am hoping to see everything covered in white by tomorrow morning.
Most of the southeast is under a winter storm warning.
I already put bowls out to catch snow for snow cream and have made a big pot of soup. This is a rare occasion where I live.

New Kettle

Tea Time, 6 x 6" oil on archival panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

available at Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh

I have a new kettle for my newly renovated kitchen and I bought it because the color is called "Ocean".
It does go well with the new paint color on the walls, which is called "Sea Salt".  Do you sense a pattern here?  You are right if you think that I cannot resist anything which has to do with the beach.  I do tend to choose paint based on the name of the color once I have it narrowed down to three or four options.
I did not get the color just right in this painting, it actually has a little more blue in it. I am enjoying my new cooking space so much, especially after almost a month of eating out every night.
This is my second painting for the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  So far so good.

Aah, Summer!

Checking The Traps, 20x16 oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry

This painting will be in my upcoming show in
Southport, NC, at Franklin Square Gallery

The study for this painting was done a few days ago on an 8x10 panel, and I had such a great time working larger for this one.
It was a sparkling clear morning in Maine when I spotted these lobstermen while we were coming back from Cape Porpoise, Maine in my cousin's boat. I was lucky to get such a great photo to work from since both our boats were in motion.
Now I am really excited about painting ocean vessels There are so many things I love to paint, and summer scenes at the coast are high on my list.

Thank you for viewing my paintings, following my blog, leaving comments, and all the great things you say about my work when I see you in the grocery store, etc.  Please feel free to forward this to someone you think would enjoy it and  maybe they'll want to subscribe to my blog.

So Many Ways To Have Fun

Wave Rider, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

This girl and her friends were having so much fun in the water with their boards, which were all yellow. I chose this girl as my painting subject because of her beautiful red hair and the turquoise color she was wearing which looked so good against the yellow.
There have been so many fantastic beach days this summer where the ocean temperature and the breezes were just perfect. This was one of those days and I spent lots of time in the waves myself.
