Island Afternoon

Island Afternoon, 9 x 12 " oil on linen panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

This was a fun painting to do while it has been raining all day.  I was at least thinking of a sunny day while I worked. I have painted this scene before and it was on a much smaller scale. I am planning to do an even larger one after I make a few adjustments to this.
My Gardenias have just begun to bloom so I will be painting those when the rain stops. I have been cutting them and bringing their sweet scent into the house. Not everyone loves them, but I surely do.

Ten Of Thirty

Rooftop Visitor, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100, free domestic shipping

Looking out at the dock in early morning and the fading light of evening while I was on Monhegan was such fun; it included many pleasant sights and sounds, like the sunrise, sunset, and numerous gulls. The lobster boats going out were another favorite, as was the view of Manana Island.
I was very fortunate to have a resident bird appear regularly on the roof outside my window. He watched me as I moved about my room and I quietly observed. I thought one morning to take a video which is now one of my favorite memories of the sights and sounds of the island. My friendly gull flew onto the roof, walked to and fro on the narrow shingles for a while, and then he stretched his neck and made some of the loudest noises I've ever heard from a seagull. Soon after, his friends seemed to be calling  him to join  the flock flying over the harbor and settling on the rocks.

Four Of Thirty

Pope's Folly Island, 6 x 8 " oil on linen, ©2014, Fay Terry

$110, free shipping

This is one of the most beautiful spots in the world; the view here is from the town of Lubec, Maine. The island forms a boundary between the United States turf, and Canadian property.  It was decided that Pope's Folly would belong to the U.S. in 1895 at the same time that an English vessel was trying to smuggle forty cases of rum onto Campobello Island while pretending to export it to the U.S. on Pope's Folly Island. The two court decisions were heard together as one, since both depended on which country controlled the island.
Pope's Folly island is named for a man who was jilted by his true love and decided to row the short distance from the mainland and live alone on the tiny island.

Boats and sunshine

Port Clyde View, 5 x 7 " oil on panel

$100  free shipping
click to purchase

I arrived in Port Clyde by mid afternoon on a beautiful sunny day. I had fun exploring and by late afternoon I really wanted to paint so I set up in front of the place I was staying and started on this view of the harbor. They made me a great iced coffee at the ice cream place you see in this painting which really helped since I was standing in sunlight while painting.
I had forgotten about this painting and I added a few finishing touches this morning so I could post this happy memory of summer.

The lighthouse and the artist

Monhegan Lighthouse & Artist working, photo by Harvey Spears

I arrived early one August morning on Lighthouse Hill and I was painting before the fog even began to lift while wishing for a sunny day. The lighthouse was not my subject, instead I was painting the white, red-roofed buildings to my left, and the large rowboat beside them.
Completely in my zone, I was not even aware of people coming and going at the scene. Later in the day I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful photographer who had been capturing images in various spots on the island, including some of me at the easel.
I hope you will visit Harvey's website and his wonderful blog.

Soon I hope to post the painting I was working on, but it needs a little more work!
By the way, the sun eventually came out.

Island Mermaid

Monhegan Mermaid, 8 x 8 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$125 with free shipping

This is one of my favorite sights on Monhegan Island, and we walked past it several times each day.
This painting was so much fun to paint, I had never painted a mermaid until now and I think I will look for others to paint, especially if they are on signs. The seagull above her and the entire sign look as if they were hand carved. It is very old so it would be interesting to know its history.

Thanks for looking at my art! It is always great to hear from you.

Guarding The Dock

Gull In The Sun, 5 x 7 " oil on panel

$90 plus shipping

This is one of the many seagulls I photographed. They never seem to stay in one spot long enough to paint. They were all quite plump but that may just be in preparation for the long cold days ahead.

Thanks for following my painting journey and for all the nice comments you send me!

Cool Spot For Painting

Camden Afternoon, 5 x 7 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100, includes shipping

While I was in Camden, Maine, I walked to the top of Mount Battie one morning to look down at the view of Camden Harbor. It was beautiful but shrouded in a light fog and it was very cold. I decided not to set up my easel and paint.  After lunch, the sun came out and I found this pretty area just south of town on the way to Rockland. The shadows on the sand were particularly nice and the lush foliage made the whole scene soft and summery.

Below is a photo of Camden Harbor (as seen without the fog) from Mount Battie.

Two From Maine

Cape Porpoise Buddies, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2013, Fay Terry
$100. includes shipping
Several years ago, I read a fascinating book by Trevor Corson, The Secret Life Of Lobsters, how fishermen and scientists are unraveling the mysteries of our favorite crustacean.  I have loved Maine and everything about it since I spent summers there as a child.
When I am there, I try to eat lobster at every meal, beginning with a lobster omelet for breakfast.
It is my favorite food, and although my mother and grandmother made every known lobster recipe, from Thermidor to  Newburg, to lobster bisque and lobster salad,  I prefer steamed lobster with just a little lemon.
I have painted quite a few of these beauties and it always makes me happy seeing their beautiful color and form.

Peaceful Spot

Lobster Boat At Rest, 8x8" oil on cradled panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

This is a beautiful spot on the Kennebunk River where  the variety of boats is amazing. You see everything from huge yachts to small inflatable boats and lots of working boats like this one.
I have stayed for hours and painted near this location while watching the continual parade of boats coming and going.  What fun!
I certainly had a great time painting this one and I hope you like it. I will probably paint a larger version of this one soon. This is the same boat that is in my recent painting "Checking The Traps".
Thank you for viewing my art and please feel free to forward this to someone who might enjoy seeing it. They can also subscribe to my blog if they like what they see.

Aah, Summer!

Checking The Traps, 20x16 oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry

This painting will be in my upcoming show in
Southport, NC, at Franklin Square Gallery

The study for this painting was done a few days ago on an 8x10 panel, and I had such a great time working larger for this one.
It was a sparkling clear morning in Maine when I spotted these lobstermen while we were coming back from Cape Porpoise, Maine in my cousin's boat. I was lucky to get such a great photo to work from since both our boats were in motion.
Now I am really excited about painting ocean vessels There are so many things I love to paint, and summer scenes at the coast are high on my list.

Thank you for viewing my paintings, following my blog, leaving comments, and all the great things you say about my work when I see you in the grocery store, etc.  Please feel free to forward this to someone you think would enjoy it and  maybe they'll want to subscribe to my blog.

Maine Memories

Monhegan Boats, 9x12" oil on panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

This was a fun scene for me to paint and I can't wait to do a larger version of this one. The sky is bluer than it looks in this photo. We had a stormy afternoon and it was raining a bit when I took this outside to photograph it.

Lobster Boat Study

Morning On The Water, 8 x 10" oil on archival panel ©2012, Fay Terry

There are all kinds of boats, but not any I would rather paint than a Maine lobster boat, especially one in action out on the ocean.  I am planning to do a larger version of this and I just wanted to do a quick study to see how it would go.  I am pretty happy with this one and looking forward to doing a big one. I will put the name of the boat on it next time, it's one I have been seeing a photographing for quite a few years.

Missing Maine

Seagull Perch, 16 x 20 oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry

available framed at Sunset River Marketplace Gallery
Calabash, NC

This painting is from one of my favorite photos that I took last summer in Kennebunkport, Maine.  I loved the light bird perched on the dark, wet rocks and the shadow behind his head. He seemed to be watching all the people on the beach, staying in one spot for quite awhile. I can just look at this and remember how crystal clear the day was with a wonderful breeze blowing off the ocean.
I nearly always include a Maine visit in my summer plans so I think it's about time to make the pilgrimage!

Cape Porpoise Lobster Boat

Cape Porpoise Lobster Boat
Our annual mother-daughter trip to Maine didn't happen this summer which made me sad, but on
a trip to Boston in August I made it to Maine for one day.  Accompanied by my son Hampton and his wife Kim AND my grand baby Brynlee, we had a wonderful afternoon boat trip with my cousin.
He even let me take his place at the helm and I navigated in and out of Cape Porpoise harbor and then back to Kennebunkport. This is one of the many boats we passed by as we were coming into Cape Porpoise and I like the gull sitting on the top.  I plan to do a larger one of this.We had so much fun that day and this is a painting from that adventure!

This is from a photo I took in Maine last summer and I have been wanting to paint this for awhile.
It seemed like the perfect July 4th painting.

Salt Marsh

Salt Marsh
This is in a very beautiful spot in Maine, The Rachel Carson National Widlife
Refuge in Wells. It is a wonderful area to walk through and catch glimpses of the ocean
through the salt marsh.  You can also see lots of birds and animals.
6 x 6 in. oil on gesso board.
