Towels On The Railing

Summer House, 16 x 20 " oil on canvas, ©2015, Fay Terry

I have been enjoying working on some larger paintings this week and it feels really good to be painting on canvas.  I love gessobord, but it's nice to have a little variety of surfaces. It was difficult to get a good photo of this, maybe since there is still a lot of snow and ice in the area outside where I set up to take the photo. I will try again later after it melts in today's sunshine.

Twenty Six Of Thirty

Before Breakfast, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

This traditional wooden market umbrella reminds me of the one we had when I was about five years old.  My mom and dad would always bring it to the beach when we were living on St. Simon's Island.
I can almost visualize the striped pattern that it had but mostly I remember the wood frame under the fabric and how huge it seemed to me then.

It is still raining here in Pinehurst, our broccoli and collard plants are looking really good from the moisture they are getting. I hope you have a restful week-end and enjoy some time with friends and family.

Day Sixteen Of Thirty

Older Brother, Younger Sister 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100 plus shipping

These siblings were so cute together at the beach on Oak Island and big brother was very protective of his sister. I felt as if I were back on the beach while I was painting this. I love painting ocean scenes.
The waves were high and the beach was full on this early September morning. Summer is my favorite time of year but I am happy that we have four different seasons to enjoy.
Thank you for following my blog.

Five Of Thirty

Peach Cottage, Bald Head Island, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

One of my favorite things to see at the beach is colorful towels hung on the porch rails to dry. This cottage overlooks the water and is always full of activity.  The houses look so sad when they are all closed up for the winter. It's nice to know there is still time left to spend on the front porch watching the waves.

Remembering Beach Days

Big Hat, Little Girl, 6 x 6 " oil on panel © 2013, Fay Terry

This is one of my favorites and it was recently sold by Sunset River Gallery, which sells quite a few of my beach paintings. The seashore is a wonderful place to play. I still love to play in the sand and water, build castles, and "dig a hole to China".
I was at the beach on Saturday and it was seventy five degrees and gorgeous. We even got to eat at our favorite waterside restaurant, which will be closing for the winter soon.
Hold on to those great summer memories to tide you over til it comes again!

Long Week End

Staying For Lunch, 12 x 6" oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$125, free shipping

This has been a fun four days for me and my family as we got together at the beach.  My husband
made it for about twenty four hours since he was working most of the week-end. We had all three of our children and our two grand daughters, both two year olds.
We saw the Southport fireworks on the 4th, and the Oak Island fireworks on the 6th, and had a great time all week end, with really nice weather.
There were lots of people on the beach and the color of this cover up was a popular neon color for beach attire.

Looking For Gulls

Uncrowded Beach, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100
Seagulls are interesting birds to watch. This one has more brown feathers than gray ones. The beach was empty and he seemed to be looking for other gulls to hang out with.
I am very pleased with the way this came out as I did the entire painting by changing the color slightly each time I put down a stroke and then leaving it alone, which I call "lay it and leave it". Sometimes a painting gets very homogenized by blending strokes.

Oak Island Summer

Little Girl, Big Hat, 6 x 6 " oil on panel ©2013, Fay Terry

This painting is from a day of watching children play on the beach at Oak Island. It is for sale at  Sunset  River Gallery. This little girl was very active and playful with her huge hat.

Bald Head Island Cottage

Sea Oats, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel

This is one of my favorite houses and I have painted it before.  This time I really wanted to capture the brightness of the sun on the roof so I put a little more warmth into the roof and coolness into other areas.
Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing this, otherwise it will be going soon to a gallery at the coast.  It's that time of year already when I start on lots of beach paintings.
This is my painting for the thirty paintings in thirty days challenge by Leslie Saeta,  a wonderful artist who lives in South Pasadena, California.  Click HERE to see other paintings in the challenge.

So Many Ways To Have Fun

Wave Rider, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

This girl and her friends were having so much fun in the water with their boards, which were all yellow. I chose this girl as my painting subject because of her beautiful red hair and the turquoise color she was wearing which looked so good against the yellow.
There have been so many fantastic beach days this summer where the ocean temperature and the breezes were just perfect. This was one of those days and I spent lots of time in the waves myself.

Family Adventure

Island Time, 24 x 12" oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry
SOLD
I was feeling ambitious so I decided to try a beach painting in a different format. I always love doing long paintings which are especially good when your subjects are all moving in one direction. This family was just coming onto the beach at Bald Head Island when my friend and I were finishing our morning walk.
Everyone is loaded down with beach stuff except the excited little girl who can hardly wait to get to the ocean.
This painting is going to the Summer Regional show at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, N.C.
Inquiries may come to me.

People On The Beach

Friendly Fisherman, 5 x 7 " oil on panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

We met this cigar smoking fisherman when we walked on the beach at Oak Island. We were impressed with the number of fish that he had caught so he pulled one unusual fish out of the bucket to show us. It's always so much fun to chat with beach people, who seem  relaxed and unhurried. Southerners are known for our slower pace and this can be beneficial because there is more time to converse with people and visit.

Collecting Tablecloths

Fay Terry, SUMMER TABLECLOTH, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel,©2012

There seems to be a dearth of good-looking tablecloths so I tend to hold onto old ones longer, especially bright colors, stripes, and fun patterns. These are especially useful in the summertime to take to the beach or throw over a picnic table, which is where this one was pressed into service. Speaking of pressing, I usually try to avoid it, and sometimes spray one with wrinkle releaser and smooth it out if it looks too wrinkly.  I'll be on the lookout for more and I know that artist Carol Maguire has a really nice line of table linens that she designed based on some of her own paintings, which I love.  Carol's linens can be seen HERE

Camden By The Sea

Camden By The Sea
Today has been a wonderful day- I dropped off two new paintings for a show near Wilmington and then spent some time on the beach with my faithful companion, my poodle, Camden.  I had really been feeling like I wasn't spending enough time with her or giving her as much attention as usual so we had fun today.  She had my full attention and rewarded me by being her agreeable, loving self.  She even layed beside me on the beach towel when I told her the beach was too crowded for her to run. (I promised her we would do that early tomorrow morning.) This little study of her with the wind blowing her ears back comes straight from my heart.

Ocean Kayak

Sold   Ocean Kayak
I decided to paint one of my wishes today.  I have been wanting an ocean kayak for a couple of years and I am hoping to find a good sale on one soon.  Actually, I want two of them so that Bill and I can go kayaking together.

Just Fishing

Just Fishing
This guy was really loving what he was doing and stayed at it for a couple of hours, catching a few fish, but mostly just enjoying the attempt.

Sailing At Oak Island

Sailing At Oak Island
This is from a photo that I took last week at the beach from our back deck.  There were so many boats out in the water that day, most of them were fishing boats, but when I saw this sailboat approaching I really wanted a picture of it. It was quite large which is hard to tell from the painting. My friends who have owned boats still say the two best days are the day you buy the boat and the day you sell it.

Sandy Is Dandy

Sandy Is Dandy
Dogs love the whole beach adventure!  There's so much to see and so much to sniff,  but one of the best parts is getting covered with sand and salt.  The lucky dog being walked by the sea usually attracts a lot of children who can hardly wait to shower your pet with love and attention.
Then there are all the other dogs, some of whom ignore every dog they pass, but some who are eager to make new friends.
