Southport Yacht Basin

View Of The Bridge, 6 x 6" oil on panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

Painting water usually gives me a feeling of coolness but it didn't work today. This was painted before the A/C was fixed and it was ninety degrees outside. My next session in the studio will be very comfortable.

The trim on this  boat in Southport reminded me of lemon and lime sherbet for some reason. The flag added more color and the whole thing framed the bridge.  We have two bridges to the island now and this one is the older of the two.  The new bridge has not been open long and saves us about twenty minutes getting to the house from Pinehurst.

Planting To Be Done

New Watering Can, 8 x 8 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2012 Fay Terry

This bench would be a good place to sit in the garden if I weren't always working in it.  My daughter and my husband found this great galvanized watering can with copper trim and gave it to me for Mother's Day. I have been using it every day to water the flowers.
This painting was fun to do because of the shadows and the sunlit bench. Unfortunately the air conditioning is not working upstairs where my studio is and I was dripping wet by the time I finished.

Best Bag On The Beach

New Beach Bag,6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

Surprise gifts are especially nice when they are something you have been needing and wanting.
This was given to me this past week-end and could not have come at a better time since we were at the beach. It is large, has great colors, and also contained a bottle of my favorite wine.  What could be better?
Thanks, Jen and Miles!

Birds Of A Feather

Ibis Study, 5 x 7 " oil on gessobord panel, © 2012 Fay Terry

These are just a few of the birds I watched beside the Oak Island Bridge recently. There were probably two hundred of them milling about in the muck and flying around close to the water at low tide. It looked like a very social gathering and I took quite a few photos.
This is also a spot where we like to go crabbing and hope to be doing that soon.

Fruit For Breakfast

Juicy Cantaloupe, 6 x 6 "oil on gessobord panel, ©2012 Fay Terry

I have recently ditched my oatmeal habit.  Cool mornings seemed to require it, these sunny mornings make me want a cold breakfast.  Cantaloupe is a favorite but ripeness is unpredictable. I rely on the sniff test which declares that if either end smells nice like the fruit, it's ready. Usually it works with practice, of course.
This gray background looks really nice on just about any kitchen wall or on a small display easel which is included with the painting.

Official Start Of Beach Season

Hugging The Shore, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord ©2012 Fay Terry
SOLD

This is one of my favorite houses at the beach because I love the way it is nestled into the sand and sea oats. Just looking at this makes me feel as if I am already at the coast.  Plans have been made for quite a while for a family week-end at the beach.  We will have a lot of fun.

Games are always a big part of our time at the beach. After dinner we play cards or dice games around the big table and then take the flashlights to look for ghost crabs on the beach and walk to the pier.

Memorial Day week-end means lots of summer stretching out ahead for beach paintings, too.
I will have some more beach scenes for you when I return.

The Exciting Future Of Fay's Blog

I've Learned A Ton!

The class I have been taking online with Alyson Stanfield and Cynthia Morris is ending tomorrow.
There is still much exciting work to be done with my blog. You will be seeing me gradually showing off all the new ideas I have gained from these two fabulous ladies.

Here is a screenshot of my blog a few weeks ago. You can see how it compares to the new look above. I have now added one of my paintings to the header and will be working on new pages listed across the top. Please stay tuned for much more to come

Ready To Slice

Golden Delicious, 8 x 8 " oil on gessobord panel, Fay Terry ©2012

SOLD

I have one of those circular apple cutters that quickly renders eight neat pieces of apple.  It comes in handy, but I still prefer the knife.  I had not eaten a Golden Delicious apple in quite a while because they don't seem as flavorful as they once were.  There are so many new and interesting apple varieties.
After the painting was completed, I tried this apple- it did not disappoint. The apple was fun to paint, and delicious. However, my real love in this painting is the tablecloth.  I will show more of it the next time I use it in a painting!

Stella d'Oro Daylillies

One Day Blooms, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, Fay Terry ©2012

You may be familiar with the Stella D'oro brand of cookies and breadsticks which was started in 1930 by an Italian immigrant in New York City. The name means "star of gold" in Italian. These lilies bear the same name and they are truly a star perennial.
Although each flower lasts for just one day, they re-bloom from May to July. They are deer resistant and prefer full sun to part shade. They are very popular here because they can take the heat and are drought resistant. When it comes time to thin them, you can give some to a friend.

Vase Of Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas And Pears, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, Fay Terry ©2012
SOLD

This is a study for a larger painting that I have already started to work on. I wanted to try out this background and see how it compares to the one I am using in the 24 x 24 " version. I will let you know what I decide after I look at both of them for a while.

Carolina Magnolia, 6 x 6 " oil painting, Fay Terry, ©2012

The Magnolias are in full bloom where I live and the lemony scent of the flowers is in the air.
This afternoon I walked around all the trees in our yard looking for the perfect flower to paint.
I think I found it.
This bloom seemed to have just the right amount of shadow on it and the petals were whiter than any others. It must have just opened a few hours ago because it had not taken on the creamy yellowish white that shows up as it loses freshness. It was also not above seventy five degrees today so that helped keep this beauty from drooping.

The Last Of A Favorite

Bedroom Iris, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, Fay Terry ©2012

It's always nice to have flowers in the house to add  unexpected color and beauty to a room. While I was trying to think of a title for this painting, the expression "bedroom eyes" popped into my head.  Though I am not sure exactly what it means, I get the gist. These are in our bedroom for a good reason.
Our cat, Bentley, loves to attack flowers and plants so we always look for a high spot that he can't jump up to and start nibbling on the flowers. Just about any foliage indoors attracts him but he seems to favor roses more than anything else and goes after the leaves. We have the perfect spot, on top of an armoire that is too high for cats, but still great for flowers.

For A Good Dog

For A Good Dog, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, Fay Terry ©2012

This yellow cup is one of my favorites for holding goodies like these "cookies" for my dogs. I had fun painting this with the lavender blue tablecloth under it.  When I was done, both my dogs were expectantly watching me to see where the contents of the cup would go.  There are no freebies, so they each had to perform a little trick in order to get a cookie. They are both pretty adept at getting what they want, especially by giving me that certain look with their eyes.

Flower Power

Flower Power, 8 x 8 " oil on panel, Fay Terry ©2012

This is one of the pansies that will be making an exit from the garden landscape next week-end when we replant several flower beds. The pansies have been able to hold on longer this spring because we have not had the high temperatures that we usually have this time of year.
One of the spots where the pansies bloomed will soon be full of zinnias and we will have to decide what is going in the others.  I am always so happy when everything is planted and we can sit back and enjoy it all, except for keeping them dead-headed and weeded, that is.

Hydrangeas In A Pitcher, 8 x 8 " oil on panel, Fay Terry ©2012

This is the completed painting that I began and posted on Friday morning. I completed it this morning while the flowers still looked fresh. It's good that I did because now at the end of the day they have wilted. The pitcher is one of my favorite pieces of pottery and is one that I often use for flowers.
