Trying something new

Watermelon Radishes, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

The watermelon radish is an heirloom Chinese Daikon radish.  It is a member of the Brassica (mustard) family along with arugula, broccoli, and turnips. I stopped at Whole Foods in Cary because I love their salad bar, and they had these beautifully sliced watermelon radishes. They are delicious and very mild so naturally I headed over to the produce department after lunch and bought some to bring home. They are my new favorite snack. They ranged in size from golf ball to tennis ball size and I chose small ones
thinking they would be more flavorful than the big ones.

They really are a very pretty vegetable.  I'll be planting these in the garden next year- too late to start from seed now because it usually turns hot by the beginning of May if not sooner and they are a cool weather veggie.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 10

Red Onion, 6 x 6" oil on panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

Red Onions are currently my favorite vegetable to paint. I didn't know how much fun I would have with the beautiful color.  I used a combination of Alizarin and Burnt Sienna with a little pthalo green added for the shadow areas. I have several of these colorful favorites so you may see more of them before I decide to make roasted red onions.

More Citrus

The Line-up, 5 x 7 " oil on linen panel,©2014, Fay Terry

$100 with free shipping

I still have some grapefruit from a big box of oranges and grapefruit that the high school band was selling as a fundraiser.  The oranges are gone since I made Ambrosia with the ones still staying cool out in the garage.
I am the sole user of grapefruit in this house, so it may take a little while to use up. I did give some to my kids when they were here. I have always called this Pink grapefruit, but now I see it only as ruby red in the grocery store.

Thanks for viewing my art!

Vitamin C On Demand

Sunny Day Orange, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

This yellow bowl is another beautiful piece of pottery from Franklin Square Gallery in Southport. I highly recommend this co-op gallery as an excellent place to purchase gifts of locally made pottery and paintings, including some of my own.

I have been eating an orange every day and I love them as an afternoon snack before I start cooking dinner.  I'd rather eat my Vitamin C than drink it, and oranges have lots, but there are seven foods that have more. Papayas, red bell peppers, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, kiwis, and strawberries all beat the citrus fruits. Kale has the most, with a whopping one hundred sixty-one milligrams. I love all these foods so no more vitamin C supplements for me.

Ready To Slice

Golden Delicious, 8 x 8 " oil on gessobord panel, Fay Terry ©2012

SOLD

I have one of those circular apple cutters that quickly renders eight neat pieces of apple.  It comes in handy, but I still prefer the knife.  I had not eaten a Golden Delicious apple in quite a while because they don't seem as flavorful as they once were.  There are so many new and interesting apple varieties.
After the painting was completed, I tried this apple- it did not disappoint. The apple was fun to paint, and delicious. However, my real love in this painting is the tablecloth.  I will show more of it the next time I use it in a painting!

Considering The Orange

Fay Terry, CITRUS, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2012

Have you ever been in a room when someone peels an orange for their snack?  Suddenly the whole
room smells great.  There are other good things about oranges that you may find interesting.
Studies show that pectin in oranges helps suppress appetite for four hours after eating.
Oranges activate the body's own detoxification process and anti-oxidants in this fruit protect the skin from free radicals and help us avoid wrinkles.
Oranges also contain a natural skin cancer fighting chemical which, along with sunscreens, really does help. Florida, where many oranges are grown, actually has a lower skin cancer rate than any other state on the east coast.  Interesting, isn't it?

Cut-Ups

Cut-Ups
6 x 6 in. oil on panel

Approximately twenty five billion oranges are grown in the United States each year.  Spain also grows a large number of oranges. I never liked getting oranges in my stocking at Christmas when I was a child, but now they are one of my favorite fruits.
