Blue Chair
Have you ever been somewhere that you couldn't find a really comfortable chair to sit in? We all need chairs that suit us and if it doesn't "sit" well, I'd just as soon not have it, no matter how good it looks.  No such problem with this blue chair, it's a keeper. The photo looks a little bit lavender, but the chair is BLUE!

Butter Bowl And Apple

Butter Bowl And Apple
This beautiful gray pitcher is one of my favorite pottery pieces from Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC. It has such a unique shape to it and the colors in it are so subtle. We have so many talented potters producing an amazing assortment of pieces.  I work in the gallery once a month and I am always in awe of the beautiful  work that our potters do.

Tulips
I decided to experiment with this a little and had fun with the colors. The pot of tulips is nice to have in the house thanks to my sweet husband who always seems to know what I am thinking about and wishing for.

Eggs-Spectant Mom?

Eggs-Spectant Mom?
Sometimes when you see something you'd really like to paint, it's wonderful when a friend suggests that you borrow it.  Thanks, Teej! This beautiful little hen was really fun to have in my studio.
has been coming up with some great painting titles for her egg paintings ((Jan.17,20,22) and this just popped into my head and I had to use it.

Green Apples

Green Apples
This was so much fun to paint, I love putting designs on things, especially pillows and ceramic pieces.  I would have kept on playing, oops, I mean working, with this but tonight is a very big night  in Chapel Hill and Bill and I are headed to the game.

My Tarheels go up against N.C. State and it is going to be quite a match up. We are really going to miss Dexter tonight(injury) and State is playing well right now-let's hope the Dean Dome intimidation factor helps us out. That, and a sea of wildly cheering fans in blue.

Joyful jump In Cabarete

Joyful Jump In Cabarete

Not everyone was stuck with cold weather last week-some of Lana and Charles's wedding guests were enjoying warm ocean breezes and fun on the beach in the Dominican Republic.  Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Fruit Break

Fruit Break
Yesterday I ate all the orange that was not in my painting set up and I forgot to go back and get the rest after I took a photo of the painting. No waste today-I've already seen to that. I had fun painting the pattern on the tablecloth.  I have noticed  that certain shades of blue do not always photograph the way they really are.  This plate, for example, is more of a bright teal with more green in it than the photo shows.  Anybody have any photography tips to solve that?  I always take the painting outdoors to shoot it the way Carol Marine taught us.

Cut-Ups On A Plate

Cut-Ups
I know these orange pieces weren't moving but to me it seemed like they were dancing around on the plate.  I used my new shadow box to set up my still life and what a difference it makes to have an area closed in so the light is more concentrated than the way I had been doing it.  Thanks to Carol Marine for the great directions to make this important piece of equipment.
It was a gray day outside, but inside there was lots of color and reflections!

Waiting For The Soup

This is one of my favorite soup bowls and I decided to paint it while my son Hampton was preparing lunch for all of us. This was a timed study and I allowed myself twenty minutes to paint this set up, making quick intuitive color decisions and using fewer brush strokes.

Pear Candles

Pear Candles
These pretty candles were a little surprise from my sweet husband after I had admired them in a store in Chapel Hill last week.  They are very lovely and have a sort of white waxy haze on them that was a real challenge to capture in paint.  Coincidentally, my friend Judy gave me a very attractive, intricately shaped artichoke candle this morning so I think I will use that in a still life for my next attempt at painting wax. Watch for it soon!

January Peach Orchard

January Peach Orchard
I would love to be a able to look out my window and see these trees as they change with the seasons! I do enjoy them when I drive by them on my way to points west of here.  Usually, I stop to take a photo or two  and the trees in these rows produce one of my favorite varieties, which is so juicy, you often need a fresh shirt after you eat one of them.

Group Portrait

Group Portrait
I have enjoyed painting and eating these Satsuma oranges so much that I plan to buy some more today when I go to Chapel Hill.  I wish that we had a great food market like the one I frequently shop at there.  There are benefits to living in a small town, so I suppose it balances out that sometimes you must go elsewhere for certain things.

Inside The Chicken House

Inside The Chicken House
There seem to be a lot of people raising chickens in their backyards
now and really enjoying the fresh eggs.  We get eggs from a couple of
friends who do this and I have to say the eggs are delicious.

Satsuma Orange

Satsuma Orange
When I was choosing oranges at the market, I picked this one
because of the very large leaf attached to it.  The others I bought all
had leaves attached, none quite as dramatic as this.
Here is a little info I found out about these oranges-
"Satsumas have that perfect balance of sweet and tart, with a rounded flavor and a great acid edge, and they just melt in your mouth." (This came from "Cooking Light" magazine)
Satsumas, a Japanese variety named for a former province of that country, were developed in the 16th century and introduced to Florida in 1876. Today most American satsumas are grown in California, followed by coastal Louisiana and Alabama, where mild winters allow the fruit to flourish.

Dog At Cafe Constant

Dog At Cafe Constant
This is the painting I worked on today and it brought back great memories of a wonderful Paris
dinner, enjoying exceptionally fine food and great company.  This charming petit chien accompanied a couple sitting at the bar and I loved the way he kept looking up at them with the light hitting the top of his head. I still have a few more things I want to do to this so I will repost it when it is finished.

In other news, I am quite pleased to have been juried into Women Painters Of The Southeast, which is a wonderful group of artists. I would encourage you to apply if you are a representational artist living in the Southeast United States  Here is a link to the WPSE website- check out these wonderful paintings, too!

Splendor In The Grass

Splendor In The Grass

That's also the name of a very old movie but I just could not help
thinking how gorgeous these two fowl look against the green grass.  There are
some chickens that are just magnificently colored and others that are so plain.

Grove Park Sunset
I know Mike Rooney (who is one of my favorite artists) might not agree with me since he is painting in Key West right now, but I think the sunset in Asheville at the Grove Park Inn rivals many other very fine spots to watch the sun go down.  I am more of a beach person than a mountain person, but still...
