Thirteen Of Thirty

Old Baldy, 11x14 oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

The great thing about islands is that many of them have lighthouses; the light on Bald Head Island is one of my favorites which  I have painted  many times from different angles.
I am fortunate that my good friend Teej invites me to visit her there and I usually get  a lot of painting done while on the island. It is a painting paradise.
The light is always referred to as Old Baldy. The first lighthouse was built in 1795 and was pulled down and replaced using many of the same bricks in 1817. It was covered with a plaster mixture of sand and lime. Old Baldy was built to light the mouth of the Cape Fear river and was not meant to illuminate Frying Pan Shoals, a dangerous area for ships, which is eighteen miles southeast of the island.

Ripe

Carolina Peaches, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

We've been enjoying lots of good peaches recently; after all, we live in the Sandhills area of North Carolina which is renowned for its peaches. A big bag of these were given to my husband on Friday and they are juicy and delicious. We took some to the beach and ate peaches on the deck while we watched all the boats, people, and pelicans passing by. We had a great time and now that we're home some much needed rain has arrived in Pinehurst.
I hope your week-end has been fun and relaxing!

Togetherness

Dogwood Doubles, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

$100 includes free shipping
The Dogwoods have been exceptionally gorgeous this spring and I can never resist trying different styles to paint them. The petals are falling now and when the wind picks up it looks like a snowstorm. The ground is covered with piles of soft white pieces.

I am hearing lots of thunder as I post this and one of  my dogs is cowering on the basement stairs.  We are supposed to get some severe weather this afternoon which may include large hail. Camden is very frightened of thunder and lightning, Pixie does not seem bothered by it. I want to get a calming vest, which I have heard really helps during storms and other times of anxiety.

Pine History

Conifer Cone, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2014, Fay Terry

Available Framed at ONE ELEVEN MAIN
SOLD

Pine trees have been important to the economy of our state for about two hundred years.  Much of NC's past was shaped by the longleaf pine. Cattlemen, turpentine producers, loggers, and even health resorts ( which is why Bostonian James Walker Tufts founded Pinehurst ) were born within and thrived under the longleaf pine. Its historic importance is recognized through the State Toast and the official State Tree.
What I find most amazing is the fact that of the estimated 1630 plants found in the southeast, more than half of them are found only in the longleaf ecosystem. This astonishing biodiversity is second only to a tropical rainforest.

I have always found trees fascinating because my dad graduated from the University Of Georgia in 1936 with a degree in Forestry and immediately got a job in Africa managing rubber tree plantations for Firestone. He knew and loved every species of tree and though I don't have his knowledge, I do love trees of all kinds.

Just Havin' Fun!

Before Practice, Dean Dome 5 x 7 " oil on archival panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$75.

Every year there is one open practice for the Carolina Tarheels and we love to attend this December event.  We arrive early for front row seats so we get to watch for awhile before practice even starts. I took lots of photos and decided to try this small painting. The players in the foreground are Dexter Strickland and Reggie Bullock.  I plan to use part of this scene in my next basketball painting and crop the photo differently so the players are larger.  It was certainly fun to paint, especially the court and the baskets. The practice lasts about two and a half hours and Roy runs a tough practice after which he answers questions from the spectators.

So for now, to paraphrase Michael Jordan and all the other player celebrities on the pre-game video, I'll just say, "I'm Fay Terry and I AM a Tarheel!

Scene From Bald Head Island

The Essence Of Summer, 16 x 20 " oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry

This painting is available at Franklin Square Gallery, Southport, NC

This is inspired by one of my favorite photos from Bald Head and is one of the most painted landmarks on the Island.  This is Captain Charlie's House.  It was once home to the namesake lighthouse keeper and is very charming. (The lighthouse is known as "Old Baldy".) It is also available as a vacation rental.

Please help this blog expand by sharing it with a friend who might then decide to click the subscribe button to get a daily painting by email.
Thank you for viewing my paintings!

Dogwood-North Carolina's State Flower

Dogwood-North Carolina's State Flower

Every N.C. Fourth Grader studies North Carolina history.
I did, and all three of my children have done the same.  It turns out to
be really fun and some wonderful projects are produced.  As a result,
most of us have pretty good knowledge of our state, well beyond the
state flower and the state bird.  Of course, my favorite story is how N.C.
came to be called the Tar Heel state.
