Green Thumb Envy

Cape Cod Window, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

When I visit friends and relatives in New England it amazes me how beautiful their window boxes and gardens are at the peak of summer. Flowers in our hot humid climate often fizzle by late July. This year may be different here since we have had almost no days in the 90's. Nothing is choking for lack of water and the water use restrictions we sometimes have are not  mentioned.
I am betting on one thing though. If the heat does get bad, I have friends in cool places that I will be visiting, looking at their gardens with envy.

Delicata Squash

 Delicata Squash
This lovely striped squash is almost ready to pick and will be part of dinner one night this week.  It is growing in the garden of Le Chateau Terry in South Carolina.  I can hardly wait to be among the lucky dinner guests who are treated to a taste of this exotic vegetable.

Sandwich Fixin's

Sandwich Fixin's
I can already taste those delicious tomato sandwiches that I'm
going to be making all summer!

It's difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.

Bugs Bunny Treat

Bugs Bunny Treat
Carrots have more sugar in them than any vegetable except beets.
This could be why Bugs loves them so much.
I chose carrots to paint because the blue rubber band around them is such
a fine "compliment" next to the orange.

All Grown Up!

All Grown Up!   SOLD
Some of you may remember the painting of the baby lettuce
plants.  I am happy to report that their beautiful green-ness
provided me with another painting-op today.  It rained most of the day
with intermittent bursts of sunshine, at which time I picked lots of lettuce.
This was really fun to paint.

Chive Blossoms

Chive Blossoms
Chives are so handy for cooking and so easy to
grow.  I have sent countless clumps of chives
to be planted in other gardens and my friends always report great success
with them.  I usually cut off all the buds because it makes for
healthier plants. This year I let a few of them bloom just because
they are so attractive.

Baby Lettuce

Baby Lettuce
6x6 in. oil on
museum quality panel

This lettuce was started in the house
in little peat pots.  It is ready for
the garden and has now been planted between
two sections of beets.  I love the name of
the lettuce-it is called "Black-Seeded Simpson"
and it's the kind my dad always grew in our garden.
