It's that time of the year, time to make persimmon pudding. We are fortunate to have a persimmon tree in our yard and it is loaded with fruit. 'Simmons, as some folks call them, can't be picked from the tree.  The only way to collect them is when they fall to the ground which means they are ripe. Eating one before it is ripe will cause your mouth to pucker from a very bitter taste, caused by the tannins in the fruit. 

I make the pudding, which is  like a very moist bread, almost every year when I've collected enough of the fruit paste.  It is tedious work to remove the skin, seeds, and caps. 

Here is how they look on the tree once the leaves have fallen. The trees in September have not lost many leaves yet, even though some of the fruit is ripening already.

Sweet, tart, red and juicy are the best words to describe one of my favorite fruits. My mom used to buy lots of fruit when we were growing up and I always loved plums. We had wild plums growing in our yard, but they were really small like cherries and only good for cooking and making plum jelly or jam.

It's hard to believe we are approaching the end of January and the completion of the thirty paintings challenge. It has been great and I have seen so many wonderful paintings from all the artists.

Isn't this puppy the cutest ever? He belongs to my friend Carla and I know he is much larger than this now. It took me awhile to get around to painting him and I had great fun doing his portrait.

He is a Aussie with a sweet disposition and beautiful coloring. He is named for Walter Payton who played for the Chicago Bears.

Sweet Temptation

It takes time to set up a still life and decide on the best arrangement for the subject.  Today I got this all worked out and ready to paint when I realized I had left something I needed downstairs. With great trust, I left my dear dog Camden in my studio and was gone for about three minutes. When I returned, she had the triangular piece down on the floor, happily slurping up several bites. I did not think it was cute. 

Much of the piece was missing so I had to fill it in not as I saw it, but as I imagined it must have looked before it was half eaten. She was banished from the studio for the rest of the day.

I was pretty mad at her, but  what was I thinking leaving her alone with such a sweet, juicy, temptation!
