The watermelon radish is an heirloom Chinese Daikon radish.  It is a member of the Brassica (mustard) family along with arugula, broccoli, and turnips. I stopped at Whole Foods in Cary because I love their salad bar, and they had these beautifully sliced watermelon radishes. They are delicious and very mild so naturally I headed over to the produce department after lunch and bought some to bring home. They are my new favorite snack. They ranged in size from golf ball to tennis ball size and I chose small ones

thinking they would be more flavorful than the big ones.

They really are a very pretty vegetable.  I'll be planting these in the garden next year- too late to start from seed now because it usually turns hot by the beginning of May if not sooner and they are a cool weather veggie.

These watermelon pieces just had to be painted because I love the way they are leaning on each other and creating those beautiful shadows. It was really fun to do this and show the nice bright green rind. Sweet Temptation

It takes time to set up a still life and decide on the best arrangement for the subject.  Today I got this all worked out and ready to paint when I realized I had left something I needed downstairs. With great trust, I left my dear dog Camden in my studio and was gone for about three minutes. When I returned, she had the triangular piece down on the floor, happily slurping up several bites. I did not think it was cute. 

Much of the piece was missing so I had to fill it in not as I saw it, but as I imagined it must have looked before it was half eaten. She was banished from the studio for the rest of the day.

I was pretty mad at her, but  what was I thinking leaving her alone with such a sweet, juicy, temptation!

Can you tell I am gearing up for the fourth? Watermelon, corn on the cob, burgers, peach cobbler, beer, and FIREWORKS. Oh yeah, beach time, too. I really love the fireworks and wish I had a camera that would take good photos of them. Any recommendations? I am starting to look for one soon.

For this painting I was inspired by all those thoughts of fun, food, and festivities, but mostly by my friend in Maine, Brenda Ferguson, who has been doing the coolest paintings with stripes.
