This is one from the past that was done from a photo I took several years ago. I like the way the chicken and rooster are linked together in the composition and each is looking in a different direction.

All of these colors together give me a happy feeling because they seem to sing. This chicken is one of the tallest I have seen and even though he did not have a lot of different colors of feathers, he was gorgeous. I am very pleased with this one.

I hope you enjoy this one, I have big plans for him. (a larger painting for sure!)

A very short distance from his home at Giverny, Claude Monet had a chicken yard. The Foundation Monet continues this tradition and, like the artist, has a different breed of chickens each year.  Monet loved to have fresh eggs available and the  two egg boxes in the pantry could hold more than a hundred eggs. The flock consisted of mainly hens, with just a few roosters on hand.

This is from a photo I took on the grounds several years ago on a visit to Giverny.

All of the chickens appeared very content in their beautiful surroundings.

This black rooster looks mighty fine surrounded by all these primary colors. I think you can tell I'm in a spring frame of mind. It's not easy to stay indoors in my studio on these pretty days.

This rooster has a grand view from here, no wonder he seems to be staring ahead as if he owns the territory. I love the play of the pastel sky colors against the bold feathers.

Standing Tall

This is the second in my series of chicken paintings and I am really enjoying the time spent on these.

I don't eat chicken or eggs and it is sad to see a truckload of these birds in cages on the highway.

Times have certainly changed since our ancestors could go out on the farm and get a chicken for dinner.

Up until the 1950's most flocks were raised on pasture land.

This rooster has such gorgeous feathers and was really fun to paint.

It has been a while since I painted chickens and these are going to be very colorful ones.

They have always been popular, perhaps because they are one of my favorite subjects.

I have taken so many chicken photos, including some in a Buddhist Monastery in Bhutan. I never miss an opportunity to get a picture of one.

This one is going to Raleigh next week to Tipping Paint Gallery.
