Lavender And Yellow

Summer Flowers. oil on canvas, ©2014, Fay Terry

This is a painting from  a while back that I thought I would post now that the leaves on all my Hydrangea bushes are filling out. I look forward to seeing them in full bloom in the next couple of months. The yellow flowers are Marigolds and we nearly always plant them because they stand up to  the summer heat.
Happy Saturday!

This is just one type of Hydrangea, called "Mophead".
There is also a lace cap type, Oakleaf, Annabelle, and PeeGee family. All of them are beautiful.

The colors in this make me happy and the white pitcher reflects the warm colors in the room.

Flowers For A Blue Moon

Marigolds And Hydrangeas, 11 x 14, oil on canvas, ©2012, Fay Terry

The flower container is a very old canning jar that came from my grandmother's house in West Virginia. I seem to always use jars for summer flowers instead of putting them in a vase.
I was inspired to paint this because the Hydrangeas were catching the light and just seemed to be glowing. The bright yellow trio was like frosting on the cake and I just couldn't stop looking at them.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed painting them!

Please feel free to forward this to a friend.

Blue Hydrangeas

Blue Hydrangeas, 6 x 6" oil on panel, © Fay Terry, 2012

There is a good article in the May issue of Southern Living magazine that tells how to change the color of Hydrangea blooms.  I have frequently sprinkled garden sulfur around the base of the plant to make the flowers bluer by causing the soil to be more acidic.  I did not realize that you could also use pelletized lime to make the soil more alkaline and turn the flowers pink.  It takes some time to see results, so it's a good idea to do it now, at the beginning of the blooming period. White Hydrangeas will stay white regardless of the pH of the soil.

I hope you missed me while I was gone for a few days.  I seldom go a day without a daily painting, but sometimes "Nana" wants to be with  her grandchildren.

Flowers On The Porch

Flowers On The Porch
Summer is made for sitting on the porch and enjoying the view and I did plenty of that this week( in addition to painting on the porch.)  Fortunately, the breezes cooperated and I was comfortable even when temperatures rose.

Hydrangeas In Blue Vase

Hydrangeas In Blue Vase
Bill arrived last night with a large shopping bag full of hydrangeas that he picked at the house, in the rain. Our "Endless Summer" bushes  are weighted down with blossoms and my husband knew how much I would enjoy having some at the beach.  I made several arrangements and decided to paint these this morning. I never tire of these as a still life subject. There is only one shade of blue that tops this one- and that is  Carolina Blue !
