Potted Petunias

Wave Petunias, 6 x 8 " oil on Raymar Panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

Our deck has eight huge pots of flowers that we can enjoy from the windows. The hummingbirds have been plentiful and so have the flowers which cascade to the floor, requiring regular trimming. I decided to paint each of them, this is the first.
By the time I complete them it will be time to fill them with Pansies that will last through the winter. Even if we have a bit of snow, they bounce right back.

I will be participating in Leslie Saeta's Thirty Paintings In Thirty Days Challenge. This will be the fourth time I have done the challenge, it is a great way to meet artists, gain inspiration, and have lots of fun. Tomorrow is  day one, so I hope you'll follow along.

Tranquil Harbor

Tranquil  Harbor, 11 x 14 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

This was painted from a recent photo taken in Port Clyde, Maine. The boat appears to be old with a fresh coat of paint. The reflection in the water was especially fun to paint. I think I would like to paint more of these small boats.

blue plate

Fresh Peaches, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, © Fay Terry

Available at Franklin Square Gallery, Southport, NC

The peaches will still be available at Kalawi Farms for another month or more. It's a bit of a drive out Highway 211, but well worth the effort. You can also taste their home made peach ice cream while you're there.
Peaches are one of my favorite subjects to paint so I will be making a few more trips to Eagle Springs to pick up more delicious fruit to paint.

Under The Umbrella

Sweet Taters, 8 x 10" oil on canvas, ©Fay Terry
S0LD

We have about five Farmers Markets in various places in town and each location sets up on a different day of the week.  They are great places to paint, if it is not too hot. This was painted in the town of Aberdeen, not far from Pinehurst and Southern Pines.

When sweet potatoes are available I buy a bushel and keep them in a cool place in the house. They are usually better tasting than what the grocery stores have, but now most of the stores are including much more local produce than ever before. I noticed that collards are already in the produce section so I'll be enjoying North Carolina greens very soon.

I hope you have a great week-end. Thanks for viewing my art.

Cute Toy Poodle again

Katie On The Deck, 8 x 10" oil on linen panel, ©2015, Fay Terry

This is my second painting of Katie from a photograph her owner let me use.  She is such a cutie and she wears red very well. I am happy with this portrait of her, but I still have a couple of things I want to adjust.
She is a  very photogenic dog with her dark eyes and the beautiful color of her hair. I am happy that I had the opportunity to paint her. Thank you, Susan!

Getting Some Z's

Long Awaited, 8 x 8 " oil on panel,©2015, Fay Terry

$130 plus $10 domestic shipping

The Zinnias have had a rough time this summer, especially since I have not been vigilant about cutting them and keeping the weeds out. However, the biggest hindrance to having beautiful blooms has been the cute little Carolina Chickadees that love to eat the petals.
I was able to pick some today to enjoy. As you may know, the more you cut these flowers, the more they produce. It looks like they are well on the way to being plentiful and the birds are behaving.

Thank you for viewing my art. I am getting back in the habit of daily posting once again and it feels good.

Paddle Boarding

Early Morning Wrightsville Beach, 8 x 8" oil on Raymar Panel, ©Fay Terry, 2015

My son Geordan loves stand up paddling.  I was on the boardwalk with our granddaughter, Maggie,  and we were all watching him and the dolphins as they swam and played.  I have never seen so many at one time, at least a dozen. We could hear them making sounds through their blowholes. There is something magical about watching their dorsal fins slice through the water and catching a glimpse of their sparkling arched dives.  Their dorsal fins can be seen in most of my photos, but their rising above the water in pairs is a beautiful memory.

We are fortunate to see dolphins off our shores year-round. The animals we spot are bottlenose dolphins and they seem as mysterious as they are magical. They do migrate, but it is not known whether they are heading north and south, or traveling inshore or offshore.

Summer Breeze

Summer Breeze, 9 x 12" oil on Linen Panel, © Fay Terry, 2015

This painting will be framed and available soon at One Eleven Main, Aberdeen, NC

This sunny day has been painted several times as I work toward doing a larger version. The next one will be twice this size and I am changing a few things each time. The original painting was done on    site. I can remember exactly how it felt that day. It's been fun trying to recapture the atmosphere of early summer.

Today is the first day of school in Moore County. When I drove past Pinecrest  High school about 7:00 a.m. it seemed strange to see football practice going on. It makes me want to do a football painting! That will be in the near future.

I was fortunate to be able to take a few pictures of this beautiful Toy Poodle one afternoon when I was painting on Monhegan.  Katie's owner had kindly taken some photos of the artists at work, which we were very pleased to have.
Seeing this dog made me miss my own wonderful dog, Camden. She is a black standard Poodle and I've had her for eleven years. She used to come to Maine, but now that much of my time is spent painting when I am in Maine, she no longer travels with me when I make the long drive north.
I took a few photos of sweet and cooperative Katie. This is the first of several that I plan to paint. I may do this pose again in a larger format.

The Toy Poodle is remarkably intelligent, it is said to be one of the most trainable breeds. They are cooperative, perky, and lively; they like to be with people. These dogs are delightful, very amusing, and keen.

Here I am painting in a shady spot
enjoying the scene I have chosen to paint!

View From Fish Beach

This is the start of a painting one early morning after I set up my easel on Fish Beach, looking toward the dock. I was able to block in the basic shapes before leaving the site. I think that I captured the color notes that I saw and I will continue working on this one in my studio. It is a 9 x 12" oil on linen panel. The sky was beautiful, so I plan to work on that area to give it more depth. There were beach roses growing in one area on the rocks and other things I would like to bring to completion.

Thank you for following my blog.

Lobster Cove

Morning At Lobster Cove, 9 x 12" oil on Raymar Panel,©Fay Terry, 2015

When I painted rocks and ocean for the first time last week, I discovered that it is destined to become a favorite subject for me to paint. I loved the puzzle-like challenge, the wind coming off the water, and the sound of the waves.
North Carolina beaches are mostly flat and sandy, with dunes and seagrass, a different kind of beauty. These rocks will keep me coming back to New England each summer, which I have been doing anyway for years. Standing on the rocks and painting is a great experience.

Foggy Morning

Fog Moves Quickly, 9 x 12 oil on Raymar panel, ©Fay Terry, 2015

This is the painting I made on the only stormy morning we had on the Island while I was there. The rains came, fog rolled in and out; we sought views to paint from covered porches and windows. This scene was chosen because I loved the view of this house from an upstairs window. It had brand new shingles on the back of the house which gave it a shot of bright color.
The afternoon brought back the sun which was exactly what we hoped for.

View Of Manana Island

Odom House, Monhegan Island, 9 x 12" oil on Raymar Panel,© Fay Terry, 2015

This was painted on a sunny afternoon and I was lucky to find a spot in the shade where I could work
without the sun on my palette and canvas. It was a fun place to paint since it was close to the main road and many people stopped to talk. My friend Louise painted the house from a slightly different view. We were across from the store where we got pineapple coconut muffins and cold drinks when we needed to take a break. It was one of many wonderful days of painting.

Crustaceans

Twin Lobsters, 8 x 8 " oil on gessobord, ©Fay Terry

This is one of my favorite lobster paintings.  I enjoyed quite a few lobster dinners and lobster rolls while I was in Maine. If you were to ask me to name my favorite food, lobster is the answer.
I am very happy with my Pescetarian eating style, (vegetarian but including fish) especially when it includes crustaceans and shellfish.
I have just started another new lobster painting, coming soon.
We watched an excellent film about lobstering one evening at the schoolhouse on Monhegan Island. The local lobsterman who was featured in the movie was there to answer questions from the audience.
It was very interesting and informative.

Sunflowers and a favorite artist

Sunflowers and Sweet Potato Vine, 16 x 20" oil on linen

I decided to paint large today with a still life set up in my studio. Rain started early; the flowers helped make it sunny while I worked. It is not yet finished, so I will continue to work on it. The tablecloth and the background are darker than they appear in the photo. I tried several adjustments and did not succeed in making it more like the painting.

On another note, I was in Rockland, Maine to visit two of my favorite places, The Farnsworth Museum and Dowling Walsh Gallery. Lucky me, I also saw one of my favorite painters. I had already been upstairs where his most recent paintings were just being installed. Colin's paintings just keep getting better every year and he is incredibly nice. Unfortunately, we are not standing near one of his  paintings. See Colin Page's website HERE.

Home

Afternoon Choices, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord
$100 plus $10 domestic shipping

Saturday and Sunday were travel days, lots of traffic from Port Clyde through the southern part of Maine. I did enjoy the drive, is anyone ever in a rush to leave Maine?
The rest of the trip was easy, but long. It feels great to be back with my family and my dogs.

This painting is my first small one in quite a while so I picked some flowers from the garden and painted these Zinnias quickly. I like the bright colors and the little vase I have painted many times.
Thanks for viewing my art!

One foggy day

We painted indoors the morning we had a storm. It rained most of the morning and there was heavy fog. We couldn't stop laughing as the "plein air" scene we had chosen to paint from a third floor window kept appearing and disappearing
every few minutes. When I got ready to
paint the boat it could not be found so
I left it out. I'll post it when I get home.

Early Morning Lobster Cove

My friends and I were on the rocks looking at the bright blue ocean by 7:30
this morning. We quickly set up our gear and I began to discover the satisfaction of painting my first seascape. Monhegan is a fine place to attempt a scene of this magnitude and I am very pleased with my result.

Painting On Monhegan Island

The weather is perfect for painting here on Monhegan. It has been fun reconnecting with lots of artist friends and getting a painting done today.
Tomorrow we will be painting at Fish Beach. I will post some paintings soon, but in the mean time, I hope you like this Monhegan sunset with a view of Manana
Island.

Sunflowers

I saw some very large sunflowers on my morning walk and it made me want to paint another big flower painting similar to this one. There were also beautiful Hollyhocks and Zinnias in the same area so you can expect to see more summer florals coming up soon.
